The Toyota Supra of the Modern Era

Toyota released the original Supra model in 1978 to compete in the Japanese and American grand touring market segment which included cars such as the Porsche 928 and Datsun 240Z. Based on the Toyota Celica’s design. The Supra was a larger and more powerful version of the Celica and became an instant hit.

Between the Supra’s debut in 1978 to its retirement in 2002, Toyota was able to sell a staggering 593,000 units. The success of the small sports coupe dwindled during the late 90s and was eventually scrapped altogether. Toyota unveiled its FT-1 concept car in 2014, and in 2018 showed off the first images of a redesigned production version of what would be called the 2020 Toyota GR Supra.
