Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A freight train crashed into a double-decker bus in Mexico on Monday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring at least 41, the nation's Civil Protection agency said.

The train slammed into the bus on the Atlacomulco-Maravatío federal highway in Atlacomulco, about 75 miles northwest of Mexico City, the agency said. Initially, the death toll was reported as eight and 45 hurt.

"This accident occurred after a passenger bus attempted to overtake a train," Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico, the operator of the train, said in a news release in Spanish.

The roof of the was torn off and pushed by the train.

Traffic was closed in both directions.

The bus was traveling from Mexico City with workers, Odilon Lopez Nava told the newspaper El Financiero.

Some of those hurt were listed in serious condition at various hospitals, Mexico News Daily reported.

The driver was taken into custody, Civil Protection General Coordinator Adrian Hernandez told Milenio.

CPKC of Mexico was transporting cars to northern Mexico.

The company was created on April 14, 2023, with the merger of Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern. The new company allows for single-line routes between Canada and Mexico.
