Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Josh Allen threw for 251 yards in the fourth quarter to help the Buffalo Bills overcome a 15-point deficit and stun the Baltimore Ravens in their season opener.
The reigning NFL MVP totaled 394 passing yards and two scores, in addition to 30 yards and two scores on the ground, in the 41-40 victory Sunday in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Bills trailed 40-25 with less than five minutes remaining before closing out the game with 16 unanswered points.
"We were fortunate to win it," Bills coach Sean McDermott told reporters. "Maybe we'll see them again at some point."
The Bills out-gained the Ravens 497-432 in total yards. They held a 29-19 advantage in first downs and an edge of more than nine minutes in time of possession. The Ravens out-gained the Bills 238-108 on the ground.
"It took everybody there," Allen said. "I'm just proud of our team for staying in it. No one on the sideline blinked, down 15 points with five or six minutes left."
Allen and the Bills opened the game with a 7-play, 50-yard touchdown drive. He ended that possession with a 15-yard touchdown toss to tight end Dalton Kincaid. But the Bills didn't find the end zone again until the third quarter.
The Ravens answered the game's opening drive with a 12-play, 35-yard possession. Kicker Tyler Loop made a 52-yard field goal for their first points of the night. Ravens star running back Derrick Henry scored on a 30-yard touchdown run about 1:25 into the second quarter. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson scored on a 10-yard run less than four minutes later for a 17-7 advantage.
Bills kicker Matt Prater made a 25-yard field goal on the next possession. Loop answered with a 49-yard kick with 35 seconds remaining in the first half. Prater added a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the half. The Ravens led 20-13 at the break.
Jackson connected with wide receiver Zay Flowers for a 23-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half, pushing the Ravens lead to 27-13.
The Bills cut into the deficit with a nine-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Running back James Cook ended the possession with a 2-yard touchdown run.
Jackson went on to complete a 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins with 74 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Allen responded with a 2-yard touchdown run about three minutes into the fourth quarter. But Henry broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run to help the Ravens recapture their 15-point edge with 11:42 remaining.
The Bills then mounted their comeback. Allen orchestrated a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive for the first points of their rally. He founded wide receiver Keon Coleman with a 10-yard touchdown toss to end that possession.
Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver forced a Henry fumble two plays later. Linebacker Terrel Bernard recovered the loose ball. Allen found the end zone with another touchdown run about a minute later to cut the deficit to two points.
The Bills defense proceeded to force a 3-and-out from the Ravens, giving the ball back to Allen for a final drive. Allen went on to complete all four of his pass attempts for 71 yards to help march the Bills to the Ravens 14-yard line. Prater ended the night with a 32-yard kick between the uprights to complete the dramatic rally.
Allen completed 33 of 46 passes on the night. Coleman led the Bills with eight catches for 112 yards. Cook totaled 102 yards from scrimmage on 18 touches. Oliver logged a sack, in addition to his forced fumble on Henry.
