Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The Turning Point USA board unanimously voted to make Erika Kirk its new chair and chief executive officer in accordance with the wishes of Charlie Kirk.

Erika Kirk is Charlie Kirk's widow and was his choice to succeed him as the conservative organization's leader if something were to happen to him.

"It was the honor of our lives to serve as board members atCharlie's side," Turning Point USA representative Doug De Groote and others said Wednesday in a news release.

"Charlie prepared all of us for a moment like this one," De Groote, et al., said.

"He worked tirelessly to ensure Turning Point USA was built to survive even the greatest tests," they continued.

"All of us at Turning Point USA have a special role in carrying Charlie Kirk's mantle and completing his vision of bringing us all close to our Lord and fostering a prosperous country for generations to come."

De Groote and others said they "will not surrender or kneel before evil" and vowed to "carry on."

"The attempt to destroy Charlie's work will become our chance to make it more powerful and enduring than ever before."

The vote came after Erika Kirk on Friday evening addressed the nation from her husband's podcast studio and vowed her husband's mission and work would continue.

Charlie Kirk, 31, co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and helped to make it an influential conservative organization that encourages youth to support conservative causes, CNN reported.

Alleged shooter Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and other related offenses on Tuesday and could be sentenced to death if he is found guilty.
