Believed to have begun with the ancient Romans, grape stomping is the practice of breaking down the fall harvest in order to extract the juice of the grapes. Modern machinery, of course, has replaced the old method, but many festivals still honor the old traditions in an activity that has become more fun than work.

California produces the most wine in the U.S., and much of it comes from Napa Valley, north of San Francisco. The region’s climate is perfect for growing grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay being among the most-produced. Numerous vineyards invite guests to get their feet dirty with the annual stomping tradition.

Another famous grape-growing region, Provence is legendary for its beauty and charm. You’ll find a number of wineries that encourage you to shed your shoes, wash your feet, and jump in a barrel of purple orbs. Located in the southeastern part of the country, Provence borders the Mediterranean Sea, so while you’re there, consider dipping your toes in its deep-blue waters.
West of Austin, the Texas Hill Country is home to numerous wineries, many of which invite guests to join in the grape-stomping revelry. Start in Fredericksburg, a charming town with German roots, and visit any of the 100 or so nearby wineries to get in a good stomp.
